Shops, Garages and Steel Buildings

Garage and pole building insulation is a big part of our work outside town. Between Iowa City, Solon, West Branch, Kalona and the Corridor there are a lot of acreages with a steel machine shed, a wood-framed shop or a detached garage that someone wants to work in through the winter.

Why steel buildings sweat

Steel siding and roofing get cold fast at night. When warmer, moist air inside the building touches them, it condenses and drips onto tools, vehicles and stored hay or grain. Closed-cell spray foam sticks directly to the steel, insulates it and stops that moist air from reaching the cold surface. It also adds some rigidity to the panels and seals the gaps at laps and trim.

Heated shops

If you plan to heat the space, foam on the walls and roof keeps the heater from running all day. We spray to a thickness that fits how you use the building and your budget, and we can combine foam on the walls with blown-in over a ceiling if the building has one.

Attached garages

For an attached garage, the most important part is often the wall and ceiling it shares with the house. Sealing those keeps car exhaust and cold air out of the living space. Rooms over the garage usually need the floor insulated and sealed as well.

Cold-weather timing

Foam has minimum temperature requirements for the surface and the air. An unheated building in an eastern Iowa winter may need to be warmed before we spray, or we schedule the work for a milder stretch. HomeGuide lists closed-cell foam at $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot installed. Get a free estimate

How It Works

1. Visit the building

We measure, look at the steel or framing, and talk about how you use and heat it.

2. Quote

You get thickness, R-value and price for walls and roof, written out.

3. Prep

We cover equipment and floors, mask doors and windows and check surface temperature.

4. Spray

Closed-cell foam goes on in passes to the planned thickness.

5. Cure and review

The building airs out, we clean up, and you can move back in.

Garage & Pole Building Insulation Questions

Can you spray foam on the inside of metal siding?

Yes. Closed-cell foam bonds to clean steel. We check for oil or rust and make sure the surface is dry and warm enough first.

Do I need a permit to insulate a pole building?

That depends on the building and the county or city. Agricultural buildings and homes are treated differently. Check with your county or city building office, and we will tell you what the work involves.

Is open cell okay in a shop?

In a wood-framed, heated shop it can work in walls. On steel or in a building that gets damp, we use closed cell because open cell lets moisture through to the cold metal.

Will foam keep my shop warm with the door open?

No insulation can do that. It will help the building recover heat faster after the door closes and keep it from dripping.
